Several asylum seekers have been notified that their application have been finally rejected and been summoned to a ‘return appointment’ , despite the fact that their application had not been fully processed. UDI acknowledges and apologize for the error.

The Directorate of Immigration (UDI) has confirmed to Klassekampen that it mistakenly sent out letters saying that the applicants had finally been rejected.

– In a letter template that is uses, the word “finally” is removed in the case of applicants who have appealed to the Immigration Appeals Board. This had unfortunately not been done in this case and we apologize, says press officer John Olav Kroken from the UDI.

The error should have no bearing on their appeal.
Adviser Georg Schjerven Hansen in Self Help for Immigrants and Refugees (Seif) said that they have represented asylum seekers who feel pressured to seek assisted return to their home country, even if they have been successful in the appeal process.

– We have received many panicked phone calls from asylum seekers that we represent who have been told that they have no chance. We tell them that it is not their Return Counselor who determines their case, and that they can reside legally in Norway whilst UNE consider their appeal, says Hansen .
