Brende concerned for civilians in South Sudan

Foreign Minister Brende strongly condemns the fighting in southern Sudan. Nearly 150 people have been killed in the capital Juba after shooting erupted Friday night.

– The fighting in Juba is totally unacceptable and pointless. I am particularly concerned about the situation for civilians in the areas where this has occurred, said Brende.

The Foreign Minister is asking President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar, a former rebel leader, to take responsibility for the peace agreement of last August and implement it.

It is still unclear what happened, but there appears to have been soldiers from the Sudanese government army SPLA, which are loyal to Kiir and rebel army SPLA IO, supporting Machar, who fired against each other.
