Foreign Minister Brende (H) is concerned over the developments in Uganda, with the opposition leader Besigye KIZZ once more getting arrested by the police.
The messages of the opposition candidate Besigye being repeatedly detained are worrying, Brende says.
The opposition leader of Uganda was arrested for the fourth time in eight days on Monday, and the police also targeted the office of the party Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
Besigye lost last week’s election to Uganda’s longtime president Yoweri Museveni, but foreign election observers, including five Norwegian, conclude in their preliminary report that there is every reason to question several aspects of the election.
– I share the concerns contained in the EU observers’ preliminary report on the atmosphere during the election campaign. It is now essential that the Ugandan authorities do their part in facilitating democratic rules being obeyed in the process onwards, and facilitate dialogue with the opposition to contribute to peace and stability, says Brende.
Museveni has ruled Uganda since 1986 and ,according to the official results, secured 60 percent of the vote in last week’s election.
Besigye received 35 percent of the vote, but claims that election fraud was widespread.
