Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen’s political party reports Sunday, July 29th,that it has won the country’s national, general election held bereft of opposition.
The Cambodian government party (CPP) reports at winning Cambodia’s election with an overwhelming majority of votes; but the election is also being called a farce & sham by critics.
The CPP press release declares winning over 80% of the vote; thus giving the party about 100 of 125 possible seats within Cambodia’s parliament. Official election results are not expected to be released until mid-August.
TREASON & CENSORSHIP
Political media outlets within Cambodia are systematically censored. Before the election, ruling party officials squashed 17 sites, including Voice of America,because the media outlets allegedly broadcast information that could impact upon national security.
In November of 2017, Cambodian courts dissolved the opposition party that almost unseated Mr. Hun Sen’s governing party in 2013’s elections.The group leader, Kem Sokha, is being held on charges of treason; accused of plotting with the United States to overthrow the Cambodian government (a charge he denies).
The United States & the European Union both offered financial aid to Cambodia after it saw its first UN-administered election in 1993. However, both the US & EU severed electoral assistance during this latest “election”.
The Kingdom of Cambodia held its first multi-party elections in 1993 after years of bloodshed and war. It is estimated that about two million Cambodian people were killed between 1975 & 1979 when Cambodia was ruled by the Khmer Rouge communist party.
