The research center Oslo Cancer Cluster (OCC), which has brought together some of the foremost cancer researchers, risk having to shut down when its day- to-day funding is ended in 2017,  the newspaper VG reports.

Everything we’ve developed, is built on private initiative. The five million kroner in day-to-day funding are trivial in this context. But this funding is crucial to our neutrality: we are a neutral and independent association and it’s important that we do not have any stronger ties to the industry than to the rest of society, Jónas Einarsson, head of the Norwegian Radium Hospital Research Foundation and a founding member of the OCC, says .
The center aims to develop breakthrough cancer treatments using some of the leading cancer researchers. The state, represented by SIVA, owns 22 percent of the center, while a number of other players also own shares in the center.
The center has got its funding from Innovation Norway Programme Norwegian Centre of Expertise (NCE) since 2007.
– We have to obey the rules that govern this kind of funding. They say that the cluster can be funded by NCES for a maximum of ten years. Occ will reach its maximum of ten years in 2017. We can not challenge the regulations of the EU, Minister of Trade, Monica Mæland said.
