Climate-neutral EU will need little oil and gas from Norway

The EU Commission estimates that energy imports could be cut by more than 70% if the EU favours climate neutrality.

The EU today imports energy for 266 billion euros a year. But this bill could be drastically cut if the EU votes in favour of a target of climate neutrality by 2050 according to the European Commission.

In particular, the dependence on imported oil and gas will be reduced according to the European Commission’s calculations. Instead, the EU will get most of the energy from renewable sources.

According to estimates, the share of imported energy will fall to around 20% by 2050, compared with 55% today.
