‘Crystal night’ (Krystallnatten) in 1938 remembered with torchlight gathering in Oslo
Arbeiderpartiet (Ap) leader, Jonas Gahr Støre, and Høyre’s deputy leader, Jan Tore Sanner, held appeals when the so-called ’Crystal night’ (Kristal Nacht) in Nazi Germany 80 years ago was memorialised in Oslo on Thursday night.
The night of November 10, 1938, saw synagogues, businesses owned by Jews and Jewish homes attacked in Germany. The authorities gave the night the name “Crystal Night” because of all the broken glass in the streets.
An anti-racist centre, in cooperation with the Mosaic Confederation and National Theater, was responsible for the event in Oslo, which included seminars, torches and appeals. Also, the Deputy Vice President of the Norwegian Parliament, Abid Raja of Venstre (V) and Ervin Kohn, Deputy of the Mosaic Confederation participated.
‘’Important to remember, important that we care, important that we prevent future hate,’’ wrote Raja on Twitter.
‘’We stand against racism, anti-Semitism, and extremism,’’ he said.
The reason that the event was held one day earlier than usual, is that the Sabbath starts early on Fridays this season.
