Paris, Mexico City, Madrid and Athens will have a ban on diesel cars to improve air quality. Worldwide, there are 3 million deaths each year linked to poor air quality, according to WHO.
The mayors of the four major cities reported that the ban on diesel vehicles will be followed up by measures to facilitate alternative transport, walking and cycling, writes the BBC.

The commitments made at the C-40 encounter between city leaders worldwide is now taking place in Mexico City.

Diesel engines produce particulate matter and nitrogen oxides. Particulate matter can cause cardiovascular diseases in the lungs.

Nitric oxide can cause difficulty breathing, even for people who have not had respiratory problems earlier, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

This week the mayor of London, Sadiq Kahn, issued warnings about poor air quality at several thousand bus stops in the metropolis.

– People in London have to know when there is poor air quality in the city so they can take steps to protect themselves, says Kahn to The Telegraph.

Earlier this year it was decided that Paris’s most famous street, the Champs Elysees, should be converted into pedestrian on the first Sunday each month to reduce smog.
