Driver sentenced for negligent driving causing death

A man in his 40s was in Lower Romerike District Court. He was sentenced to prison for one year and five months after a head-on collision in Sørum two years ago. The man’s father died in the accident.

The accident occurred at county road 170 in Sørum on September 30th, 2014. The 40 year old man drove with his father, he went into the oncoming lane and crashed into a truck.

The man was severely injured in the accident, but his father died in the crash. Now the son is sentenced to prison for negligent driving causing death, reported the Romerikes Blad.

The man is sentenced to prison for one year and five months – nine months cut out of the sentence for the trial period of two years. He is also ordered to pay a fine of 5 million NOK and court costs.

– My client has taken time to think. He is of course affected by this deeply tragic event, said the convicted man’s lawyer, Marte Svarstad Brodtkorb.

According to the court it has proved that the man was under the influence of amphetamines when the accident occurred. In addition, the car was traveling at a speed of 90 km / h despite the fact that the speed limit was 70.

The man testified that he did not remember anything from the accident, and that he has no explanation for why he crossed into the opposing lane of traffic.
