Kosovo has fulfilled the EU’s visa waiver conditions for the Schengen area, the European Commission stated.

The EU’s visa waiver proposal was presented two years ago.

The demand from the EU was that Kosovo ratified a border agreement with Montenegro and stepped up efforts to combat organised crime and corruption.

Now those conditions are fulfilled, the European Commission announced on Wednesday.

“Kosovo has made great progress over the past two years,” said Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos.

He encouraged the European Parliament and the headquarters of the Schengen countries to approve the visa waiver for the country.

Five EU countries still do not recognise Kosovo as an independent state: Spain, Slovakia, Cyprus, Romania, and Greece.
