The first instance of transmission of Zika infection to  date from a woman to a man has been registered in New York.

According to US health officials, the case concerns a non-pregnant woman in her twenties who had unprotected sex with a man the day after she came home to New York. She had visited an area which is currently affected by numerous cases of zikasmitte.
Until now, experts only discovered some cases where the virus has spread from men to women during intercourse, as well as the far more common infection via mosquito bites.
The infection was discovered as the woman got a fever and other symptoms of infection. The male in question has not been outside of the US in the last year and has not had other partners in the week before he became ill.
The Zika virus can cause birth defects, including microkephalia, which means that children are born with abnormally small brains.
