Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been convicted of corruption and sentenced to three years in prison. Two years of the sentence have been made conditional.

The sentence is milder than what the prosecution had requested, which was a total of four years, of which two were to be conditional. The former president can apply to serve time at home with a security anklet.

The case was closed in December, but Sarkozy and his co-defendants had to wait almost three months for the court’s conclusion. In addition to prison sentences, they risk fines of up to EUR 1.2 million – around NOK 12.5 million kroner.

The 66-year-old former president, who was in office in France from 2007 to 2012, along with lawyer Thierry Herzog, were charged with corruption in connection with an attempt to bribe Judge Gilbert Azibert in 2014.

Azibert was also charged.

The charges are based on police tapping telephone conversations between Sarkozy and Herzog.

The case has attracted a lot of international attention – never before has a former French president had to answer in court for such serious offenses.
