A new report shows that 36 percent of immigrants are living in poverty in Norway today, compared to 5 percent of children of Norwegian parents.

– Generally, we can say that many children of immigrants are living in households with low labor affiliation, and many live on social benefits. And those parents who have jobs often have low income, says SSB researcher Elisabeth Omholt to newspaper Dagsavisen.

A report submitted by Omholt and her colleagues show that 36 percent of children of immigrants are living in poverty in Norway, and the numbers are slightly higher in Oslo.

In comparison, only 5 percent of children of Norwegian parents in the same situation.
Leader Athar Ali in Norwegian Immigrant Forum says poverty among immigrants leads to mental disorders such as anxiety and depression.

– This has negative consequences for children’s upbringing, and it makes people’s lives difficult, says Ali.
