In the capital city, several thousand people sat in the torchlight protest against raising and slaughtering animals for fur. Also, in other cities across the country, fur opponents took to the streets.

In Oslo, the crowd moved from Youngstorget to Parliament, where, among other bloggers, Sophie Elise Isachsen, and author and former police officer, Hanne Kristin Rohde, gave speeches.

In over 20 other Norwegian cities, fur opponents attended torchlight vigils on Saturday. The animal protection organization, NOAH – For Animals’ Rights (NOAH – for dyrs rettigheter), are behind the events, which are held every year.

Police in Oslo estimated to news agency NTB that between 3,000 and 4,000 attended the event.

This year’s event was special, as the Agriculture and Food Minister, Jon Georg Dale, last week presented the White Paper on the fur industry’s future.

In this, it emerged that the government will not stop the industry altogether, but rather introduce a number of stringent requirements.

‘It is very important to mobilise now, both for us and for passionately concerned people across the country. After the White Paper came out, we received many inquiries. People are upset and disappointed’, said NOAH leader Siri Martinsen.
