Brazil’s new government has announced that they will continue cooperation with Norway on the preservation of the Amazon rainforest.
It is announced by Climate and Environment Ministry after the new Brazilian environmental minister Sarney Filho met Norwegian ambassador in Brasilia earlier this week.
Filho also confirmed that Brazil maintains its target for reducing deforestation in the Amazon by 2020. The goal is 80 per cent reduction compared with the average level between 1996 and 2005.
Michel Temer has taken over as the new president of Brazil after Dilma Rousseff was deposited under impeachment against her in late August.
Environmentalists have expressed concern since Temers government is based on the support of farmers and agricultural interests that in many cases want to chop more rainforest to clear new land for agriculture.
Norway has donated large sums of money to Brazil as part of the Norwegian initiative on the protection of tropical forests. Financial support presupposes that the country can prove that deforestation continues to decline.
