The EU’s proposal to create asylum and refugee reception centers in North Africa was not rejected by the Norwegian government.
The proposal was presented at the Union crisis meeting in Brussels this past Sunday.
“It is important to us that we have a common European asylum policy, that we have common rules and norms, and that we can participate in the measures taken to create common solidarity,” said Prime Minister Erna Solberg (H) to the NRK.
At the crisis meeting in Belgium’s capital, EU leaders discussed the need for a common European migration policy. So far, one suggestion peeked an agreement that reception centers in Northern Africa can be a solution.
“I think Norway must also keep track of what is going on and possibly participate, provided that important criteria are included,” said Solberg.
One of the countries that called for changes at the weekend’s meeting was Italy, who called for “radical changes” in EU migration policy.
Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said that, among other things, the Dublin agreement may unravel. The agreement is that refugees and migrants must apply for asylum in the EU country they arrive first. Conte thinks that this must change dramatically.
