48 people were killed in traffic during the summer months this year, ten more than the same period last year. So far this year 95 people lost their lives in traffic, according to preliminary figures from the Public Roads Administration.

In June 15 people were killed (compared with nine the previous year) and 22 people in July (compared with 15 in 2015). In August so far 11 people lost their lives, which is three fewer than the same month last year.

– We have no simple explanation for this evolution. Although the figures are slightly higher than last year’s record low number of casualties, it is still lower than the year before the previous year, said Guro Ranes NPRA in a statement.

The preliminary analysis of summer accidents shows that men account for the entire increase in the number of fatalities, especially those over 45 years. While six fewer women died in car accidents in June, July and August than last year, there were 16 more men who perished.

Rogaland has been hardest hit in the summer, with seven fatalities, while Vestfold and Nord-Trøndelag are the only counties that have come through in summer 2016 without a single fatality in traffic.

During the first eight months, 95 people have died in traffic. This is 28 more than in 2015, but still lower than the year before. In 2015 117 people were killed on Norwegian roads, which is the lowest figure since 1947.
