Illegal rental ads around online

Several residential landlords are requiring extra payment for internet, washing common areas and cable TV, contrary to what the law allows.

Bergens Tidende has gone through a selection of ads that are scattered across Finn.no and found dozens of offenses.

– It’s probably tempting to lower the rent, and then add additional charges next to the apartment price in order to make it more attractive. But such creative marketing is strictly illegal, says regional director Pia Kleppe Marken of the Consumer Council.

If a landlord requires such payment one is free to deny it. The only expenses landlords are allowed to charge beyond the rent are costs for electricity, heating, water and sewage.
