“Kissinger a war criminal,” it said on a banner which faced the controversial Henry Kissinger when he was in Oslo to give the lecture “World Peace after the US presidential election.”

Another banner had the inscription “Kissinger Trial”.

The protesters believe the former US security adviser and foreign minister in the 1970s was involved in mass murder in Latin America, bombing of civilians in Vietnam and the coup in Chile.

– He should be brought to justice. We are accusing Kissinger of being a war criminal and directly responsible for Operation Condor in seven countries in Latin America, said the leader Herman Rojas to news agency NTB.

He came to Norway from Chile in 1978 when his family were victims of the dictatorship and faced persecution. Condor was the name of the secret war against the left opposition in the region.

The demonstration outside the university building in downtown Oslo got the support of the Socialist Youth, Red and Latin America groups.

Kissinger was in Oslo at the invitation of the Nobel Institute and the University of Oslo to talk about world peace after this fall’s presidential election in their homeland.

He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973, an allocation which several have been characterized as one of the biggest mistakes in the Prize’s history.

Kissinger received the award together withhis Vietnamese counterpart Le Duc Tho, who refused to accept the award. Two members of the Nobel Committee resigned in protest against the award.
