A new Kripos group with facial recognition experts will fight against passport fraud. In addition, your passport pictures must be taken in a new way.

“This is a quantum leap for ID control in Norway. We as people believe we are pretty good at assessing faces, but research shows the opposite,” says senior advisor Frøy Løvåsdal from the police directorate of VG.

When ordering a new passport, the pictures will first run through the automated face detection system. If the search fails to conclude, or if it is doubtful, the pictures will be sent to the new expert group at Kripos.

The police have previously stated that too little is done towards ID theft in Norway and that it is too easy to cheat with identity. It may now change.

“For example, if I find your passport or any other type of ID document that belongs to you and try to get a new passport with your name, it will be difficult. Using the Face Recognition Program, you will see that this is probably not yours,” says Løvåsdal.
