Immigration Minister Sylvi Listhaug said she is disappointed that the Labour Party leader Jonas Gahr Store will not support the Government’s proposal for stricter requirements for family reunification.
– I hope the Labour party changes stance as they have done before, says Listhaug to the news agency NTB.
Labour announced on Wednesday that the party will not support the government’s proposed stricter measures in the requirements for family reunification. The new proposal has a requirement for three years employment or education in order to get the family to Norway, as well as higher income requirements.
Labour leader Jonas Gahr Støre pointed out that UNHCR has warned against the splitting of families.
– I note that Labour is leaning on the United Nations and want a less radical approach to the issue than us, but in these difficult times we are experiencing , we cannot afford to be naive and a soft touch on immigration, says Listhaug.
She believes UNHCR makes recommendations that go beyond Norway’s obligations.
– We fear that Labour is now sending signals about  new and more liberal politics, and that can result in an increased flow of refugees again, she adds.
Listhaug believes Labour has changed its course under Minister Støre. – This would not have happened under Stoltenberg, she asserts.
