Prime Minister Erna Solberg and Erik Solheim, the newly appointed head of the UN Environment Programme,  will attend a major conference in Oslo on the conservation of rainforest this week.

About 500 representatives of governments, private companies, organizations, indigenous groups and research institutions from around the world will be present at the event Tuesday and Wednesday. Climate and Environment Minister Vidar Helgesen will also attend.
– The destruction of the world’s rain forests must be stopped over the next few years if we are to reach the global climate targets and UN sustainable development goals. Norway plays an important part in this work, he said in a statement recently.
Brazil and Indonesia
The opportunities for international efforts forest conservation in the wake of the new climate agreement from Paris will be a major topic at the conference, organized by Norad.
In addition, the plight of the rainforests of Brazil and Indonesia will be discussed. These two countries are two of the most important partners in Norway’s Climate and Forest Initiative, which has been running since 2008.
The principle behind the initiative is that the rainforest countries will be paid large sums of money as a reward if they reduce deforestation. The goal is reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the preservation of the vast number of animal and plant species found in the tropical forests.
