According to a new survey from Norsk Folkehjelp (Norwegian People’s Aid), eight out of ten think that Norway should adopt the UN’s decision to ban nuclear weapons. However, Norway is unlikely to vote for a ban in the United Nations.
– To vote for a nuclear ban in UN is not aligned with Norway’s current foreign policy, says Øyvind Halleraker of the foreign and defence committee in Parliament to NRK news.
Should we believe the study of Norwegian People’s Aid, (an organization that is working towards a ban), the majority of Norwegians do not agree with the politicians. 83 percent of respondents think that Norway should vote yes to the UN to start negotiations. 8 percent think that Norway should vote no, while 9 percent said they are unsure.
Earlier this year Parliament adopted that Norway will work towards a “legally binding framework” to secure the goal of abolishing nuclear weapons. Nevertheless, Norway said no to starting negotiations for the ban on nuclear weapons.
Foreign Minister Brende (H) made it clear earlier this year that the government will not support talks that could be said to disagree with NATO’s strategic concept. This concept states that the alliance should have nuclear weapons as long as there are nuclear weapons in the world.
