City councils in several Norwegian cities have decided to allocate funding for aid agencies working in Syria.
On Saturday, it become clear that all parties in Stavanger City Council endorses a gift that will go to Doctors Without Borders’ work in Aleppo, wrote the newspaper Stavanger Aftenblad.
– What happens in Aleppo is unimaginably tragic. We are an international city and we have several of our citizens from Syria.
Therefore I am very happy that I have the entire City Council in giving a contribution from Stavanger, said Mayor Christine Sagen Helgø.
Based on the decision from January the financial support of one million NOK will be formally transfered.
Encouragement from Bergen
Cities from western part of Norway support contribute money to charities working in Syria.
Earlier this week Bergen Mayor Marte Mjøs Persen inform about a new budget with support from all parties in the city council.
– The reason is the extraordinary situation that we see now in Aleppo and elsewhere in Syria. NRC is present there, and we think they can help, the mayor said to the newspaper Bergens Tidende.
The parties have agreed on a contribution of one million NOK to NRC in Syria and Syrian refugees.
Mjøs encouraged other Norwegian municipalities to follow Bergens example.
Trondheim and Oslo
It was an invitation Trondheim took in stride, and Thursday night had a unanimous City Council decided to give one million to the Red Cross, to be used in Aleppo, according to the newspaper Adresseavisen.
16th of December adopted the Oslo City Council, on behalf of the capital’s population, providing one million to NRC in civil war-torn country.
