From 2017 to 2018 the number of train passengers increased by 5.7%. More than 77 million journeys were taken by railway in 2018 according to Statistics Norway’s (SSB’s) rail statistics.

Of these, more than half of the passengers used the local trains around the capital the figures from SSB show.

The InterCity track accounted for a total of 19.4% of the journeys.

The so-called transport work for passenger traffic also increased compared to last year and was 3.7 billion passenger kilometers.

That is, the average train passenger travelled just under 48 kilometers.

There was also an increase in freight transport, albeit somewhat modest. A total of 35 million tonnes of goods were transported by rail in 2018.

That was just over 250,000 tonnes more than in 2017. Freight transport by rail amounted to 4.1 billion tonnes, an increase of 2.1% compared to 2017.
