New Board of the Islamic Council of Norway finally defined after controversy

An extraordinary general meeting of the Islamic Council of Norway (IRN) has elected a new board after the conflict surrounding the organization’s general secretary.

The entire old board resigned on June 4th this year in protest against the council rejected the resignation of General Mehtab Afsar in a council meeting.

Chairman Ghulam Abbas claimed that the board had uncovered serious deficiencies in Afsar’s work the current board suspicious had led to a significant weakening of IRNs reputation.

The unveiling ended with Abbas and the rest of the board resigned General Secretary but the decision was thus overruled by the parent council.

Then the full board came instead.
Saturday was the long-awaited extraordinary general meeting held.

A new Board of Directors consisting of eight men were chosen from 17 nominees.
– Five of them were women, but no one had unfortunately the opportunity to stand for election, the Council specified on their website.

The new board now sits until the ordinary general meeting in March next year and granted discharge from liability for the period from June 4th, when the old board resigned in protest, and until October 15th.

The conflict has made waves within the Muslim cooperation in Norway.

Some mosques will have threatened to resign unless Afsar leaves, and there has been talk about forming a new organization.
