For the autumn’s municipal and county council elections, there will be a record number of eligible voters. In particular, the number of older people who can vote increases.

Figures from Statistics Norway (SSB) shows that around 4,197,000 inhabitants have voting rights at the autumn’s election. “That many voters there have never been before in Norway,” according to Statistics Norway.

Overall, there is an increase of about 180,000 people with voting rights since the previous election in 2015. There is a particular increase among voters between 67 and 79 years, almost 70,000 more voters than at the previous municipal and county council elections.

At the election in the autumn, there will be slightly fewer first-time voters than last time, as there is a slight decrease in the number of 18-year-olds and 19-year-olds with voting rights, SSB reports.

This year’s local election is also the first election where there are more men than women who have the right to vote after universal suffrage was introduced.
