The Government proposes to allocate NOK 34 million in the state budget for next year to various measures in the asylum centers.

Immigration and Integration Minister Sylvi Listhaug will get 23.3 million kroner to introduce 50 hours of lessons in Norwegian culture and society in asylum centers, the newspaper Dagbladet.

In addition to this 10.9 million kroner are to be set aside to dialogue groups in order to prevent violence in the reception centers.

The minister believes the lack of knowledge about Norwegian society plays a big part in forming the attitudes which lead to acts of violence in the reception centers.

– It is important to ensure that those who are in Norway for some time know the main values and rules of our society. This particularly applies to freedom of expression, religious freedom and equality of status between the sexes,  Listhaug says.

She also believes that learning Norwegian values is a significant part of violence prevention.

– No one leaves their attitudes “behind at the border”. If you are from a country where women are not respected, it is very likely that this is still your attitude when you come to Norway, says Listhaug.
