A peaceful transition to civilian rule in Sudan is crucial said Foreign Minister, Ine Eriksen Søreide. Norway encouraged political reforms in the country.

Political reforms are a prerequisite for solving the country’s economic crisis and for achieving stable and sustainable development said Søreide of Høyre (H).

It is crucial that the transitional military regime facilitates a credible and inclusive political process that lays the foundation for democratization, as well as political and economic reforms she said.

“A military regime does not respond to the Sudanese people’s legitimate demands for democracy. We urge the transitional military regime to quickly put in place a transitional civilian regime said the Foreign Minister.

The military in Sudan deposed President Omar al-Bashir in a coup on Thursday. They overruled the constitution and said they would keep power for two years.
