Defence Minister Ine Eriksen Søreide  met Friday her British colleague Michael Fallon to sign a declaration on enhanced cooperation in the Northern seas.

The two defense ministers met on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Warsaw.
– We pledge to work together in all areas where it is possible, to meet the challenges of the northern seas, said Fallon.
– We believe we have a special contribution to make to NATO by helping to secure our autonomy and our freedom of movement at sea, particularly the supply lines across the Atlantic, he said.
Fallon emphasized that both Norway and the UK is now making investments that will strengthen the defense capability at sea.
– We must ensure that we are able to defend ourselves and our allies, if necessary, stressed Søreide.
Fallon rejected for the Norwegian press that the strengthening can contribute to increased tension in the northern seas.
– These are defensive measures. They do not threaten anyone else, but they show that we have a better understanding of what happens in the north and of the potential threats to us, Fallon insisted.
