A Norwegian citizen is charged with murder in Riga. The man was arraigned at the police station in Oslo’s Grønland. He says he acted in self defense.
The man is being questioned in Oslo, but the case is being investigated further by the Southwest police district. The man is being presented for detention in Oslo District Court tomorrow, prosecutions lawyer Stian Eskeland of the Southwest police district informs.
Latvian police have confirmed that they are investigating a murder with an unknown perpetrator, police said in a press release. Norwegian police have contact with Latvian police through Kripos.
“The accused has given an explanation to the police, but for the sake of the investigation I will not go into his explanation,” says Eskeland.
It was Dagbladet who first mentioned the case.
According to the newspaper, the man, who is from Stavanger, has explained that he stabbed a man to death. The murder should have happened earlier this week.
The defence attorney, John Christian Elden writes in a text message to NTB that the man has acknowledged having taken another man’s life but that it was in self defense.
“He traveled from Riga to the police station and turned himself in there,” said Elden.
According to the defendant, the man from Stavanger has consented to remain in detention, but pleads not guilty.
