Norwegian sports personality sentenced for human trafficking

A 50-year-old man was sentenced to three months in prison in Oslo district court for smuggling three women to Norway under the cover of being au pairs.

 

In court, the man admitted having received the three women into the country during the period from May 2009 to May 2013.

To the Norwegian authorities, he explained that the purpose of the women’s entry into Norway was that they would work as au pairs for him. Instead, the women helped to take care of his seriously ill mother wrote ABC News.

The court considered that the man, who had been on the national team in his sport and participated in the Olympic Games must have understood that care of the elderly was not covered by the au pair scheme.

The man and his wife were also charged with helping nine Philippine citizens gain illegal residence in Norway by providing for either work or housing.According to the accusation, these offences continued from December 2008 to December last year.

In court, the man was convicted of having helped a total of nine persons gain illegal residence in Norway, and for having six of the women working for themselves without the necessary work permits. The husband’s wife,who pled not guilty to a criminal conviction, was sentenced to 30 days in prison for assisting in the illegal residence and use of illegal work by the women. Her prison sentence was conditional on two years of probation.
