In the last four months of last year, the number of asylum seekers was higher than it ever had been before. In the first four months of this year, the number plummeted by 95 percent. Lowest since 1997, says UDI.
In the last four months of last year 22 818 asylum seekers arrived in Norway, co 1.185 persons in the first four months this year, according to figures a report by the Directorate of Immigration (UDI) business which ABC News has gained access to.
– This is the lowest number of asylum seekers coming to Norway since the first four months of 1997. Then 499 asylum seekers came to Norway, the agency writes.
UDI also ascertains that the small number of asylum seekers “is clearly related to the border and ID checks in Norway, Sweden and Denmark and elsewhere in Europe.”
The trend is likely to continue, since the agency has reduced the the number of asylum seekers expected to arrive in Norway in 2016 from 33,000 to 25,000.
