One out of two Norwegians are news seekers, while one out of ten are news avoiders, according to a media survey. The largest number of news avoiders are found among young people, and especially among women.
Nearly half the population claim to be news seekers, with a strong interest in keeping up to date on the hard news, according to a survey of Norwegian media consumption.
– These are interesting findings, confirming that the Norwegians are concerned about news. However, in a democracy perspective, it can also be cause for concern that a group largely composed of young people, is unconcerned about hard news, says Media Diversity Committee chairman Knut Olav Åmås.
Beacuse the survey shows that one out of ten Norwegians say they have little interest in hard news and can thus be characterized as news avoiders.
While interest in hard news is stronger among the elderly and, also somewhat stronger for men than women, the largest proportion of news avoiders is found among those under 30 years of age, especially women.
