A Spanish worker was injured when a 30 tons heavy object fell into a tunnel in the construction of the Follo Line. All workers were evacuated after the accident.

– One person is injured, but not seriously, said operations leader Gjermund Stokkli of Oslo police. The person was sent to hospital.

There was also a large fire and explosion at the site due to leakage of gas cylinders after the incident, but the risk of explosion is over. According to police shortly after at 4am on Thursday morning they were notified of the accident at midnight.

– The work was suspended until the police could conduct an investigation during the day, said Stokkli. Labour Inspectorate, National Rail and the Spanish company Acciona GHELLER Joint Venture who perform work in the tunnel were also  notified.

The accident occurred about 800 meters inside the tunnel, located at Åsland on the border between Oslo and Follo, according to the Operations Officer. He can not say what kind of object came crashing down, or how many workers were inside the tunnel at the time.

The development of the Follo Project is the largest transport project. Acciona GHELLER’s joint venture is responsible to build the bulk of the nearly 20-kilometer-long tunnel, the company said.
