The Police Immigration Service (PU) asked the immigration minister to change the so-called ‘Storskog-instruction’ so that asylum seekers can gain merits toward their cases in Norway.
In a six-page letter seen by TV2, the PU stated that it is not possible to send the (approximately) 1,300 Storskog refugees back to Russia.
In the letter, dated October 28, the PU wrote that the Justice Department had erred, as asylum seekers with residence permits or visas of a longer duration, would be able to attain grants to stay in Russia, and the Directorate of Immigration (UDI), after receiving pressure from PU, raised this issue with the Ministry.
‘As decisions can’t be implemented through a return to Russia, we believe that the higher authority should reassess the rejection practice.
We have communicated this to the authorities and requested that consideration of these matters should be taken on their merits’ stated the letter.
