Pope Francis has received almost 50,000 birthday greetings on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The messages have come to an email account that was set up for the occasion, reports the Vatican.

Greetings came in Latin, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, English, French, German and Polish. More than 1,000 of them were in Latin.

Pope will become 80 years old on Saturday and decided to spend the day together with eight of Rome’s homeless, who live around St. Peter’s Square.

During breakfast with them he received three bouquets of sunflowers as the gift, which he has placed in the chapel at his home in Santa Marta.

Soup Kitchen in Rome has offered people cake on behalf of the Pope on Saturday afternoon. People staying at the hospice also got a picture of the pope and small gifts, according to the Vatican.
