Snow is on its way to southeastern Norway. The most vulnerable areas of the north eastern region of Norway are expected to get up to 50 centimeters of snowfall at the weekend, says Storm Meteorologist, Cecilie Villanger.

According to forecasts, southern and eastern Norway will receive rainfall precipitation in the form of snow already by Friday. Only a week ago, a mild winter was predicted. Otherwise the country will be mostly stay much the same, with opportunities for rain across much of western Norway.

‘In Oslo, there could be between 20 and 40 centimeters of snow between Friday and Sunday’, said Villanger.

She is supported in her forecast by Vibeke Tines at the Meteorological Department.

‘In north-eastern Norway, we can prepare for snow and full winter at the weekend. Also inland, in western Norway, we may also get some snow’, said Tine.

Statsmeteorologen (the state meteorological department) believes there will be snow in several areas Østafjells only, but says it’s too early to estimate the amount.

The precipitation will come as rain or sleet – at least in coastal cities. There will also be wind, and stiff breezes into the weekend, according to meteorologists.

Nationwide temperatures are already in free-fall, and this weekend we‘ll probably see the first night without plus-degree temperatures anywhere in the country, believes Villanger.

‘Temperatures will drop quickly over the next few days. Only along the coast of southern and central Norway will temperatures remain above freezing during the week. The west-coast may get plus-degrees on Sunday.

In Finnmark, it’s thought that snow showers will come even before the weekend, while Troms and Nordland will have to wait a few days.

‘There is no snow on the menu for Troms at first, but it’s possible in Nordland on Sunday or Monday’, says Tine.

A low pressure front passed between Greenland and Iceland, then eastward and settled over Denmark on Friday morning, though will leave over the weekend.
