10 Norwegian foreign warriors have probably been killed, while 20 are still alive, the Police Security Service (PST) informed NRK news.
According to PST, the status of the approximately 100 people with Norwegian nationality who have travelled to Syria and Iraq to join an extremist group is as follows: 40 have been killed, 40 have returned to Norway or travelled to another country, while 20 are still alive.
‘’Just under half of those who are alive are women’’ said senior counsel, Martin Bernsen of PST to NRK news.
He emphasised that the numbers are not exactly accurate because it is difficult to confirm the information coming from these areas.
Until now, PST had believed that about 30 foreign fighters with Norwegian affiliation had survived the civil war in Syria, but according to the recent figures, ten of these have lost their lives.
According to the estimates, PST believes that at least two women have died, but so far no female Norwegian IS have been killed. At least eleven women have gone to Syria from Norway.
Bernsen stated that 13 Norwegian foreign fighters are wanted in Syria and Iraq for arrest.
Among the 100 people with Norwegian affiliation who have travelled to Syria and Iraq to join an extremist group, 60 have Norwegian citizenship according to the new figures. The rest are related to Norway in other ways, including through family, and work.
