Male dies in a car crash in Sarpsborg

A man in his thirties died when he drove into a tree after avoiding a police control in Sarpsborg in Østfold on Thursday evening.

East Police District was notified of the car crash on national road 109 at 11.50 pm on Thursday.

“The driver of the car avoided a control from the police. The police patrol attempted to wave the car down. It shortly after drove off the road and into a tree, Operations Manager in East Police District, Gisle Sveen, tells NTB at 1 am on Friday.

The man was declared dead on the spot. His relatives are notified.

Erratic driving

The incident happened at Sandesund Bridge. The driver reportedly avoided control at the local Esso petrol station. The driver hit the tree after «a few minutes», the police informs.

The road was closed for technical investigations at Borregaard Main Farm after the incident. It was reopened for traffic around 4 am.

Officer in Charge, Per Olav Tjore, tells Sarpsborg Arbeiderblad that the police patrol wished to stop the car at the petrol station due to «very erratic driving».

“They did not succeed in that. The car then escaped at high speed,” Tjore elaborates.

The police subsequently followed the car.
