This year it’s 1,000 years since Sarpsborg was founded, and the city marked the occasion on May 17 with a big celebration. Thousands showed up to celebrate the National Day and the anniversary in the city’s amphitheater.

I am so proud and happy. It’s just absolutely beautiful. Now they are singing our Sarpsborg song, Mayor Sindre Martinsen Evje (Labor) said to NRK.
According to the channel, there were over ten thousand people gathered in the city amphitheater to witness the celebration of the 17th of May and the city’s 1000 birthday.
Among those attending were children from Hafslund elementary school. Dressed in Viking costumes, they also celebrated the school’s 100th anniversary.
– The colors of the costume represent important aspects of Sarpsborg. The blue represents the waterfall and Glomma, both of which are important for us in Sarpsborg. And the red is because of bricks,  inspector Kristi Norheim said.
