Another two moose have been diagnosed with the deadly disease CWD. The two moose who have caught the disease live in Selbu in Sør-Trøndelag. The FSA is concerned.
“Although the disease is not dangerous to humans, we are concerned that this could become a problem for deer here in Norway,” the technical director of the FSA, Kristina Landsverk, told NRK news.
In late May, the disease was discovered in another female moose in the same area. It was the first time the disease had been discovered in moose. The disease was first discovered in May, in Europe on a reindeer in Sogn og Fjordane.
There will now be more samples of animals across the country, and plans for a systematic survey of deer will be ready in a short time, according to the FSA.
Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is known to be fatal. Other diseases of the same type are scrapie in sheep and BSE in cattle. CWD is known primarily in the US and Canada, and it concerns the FSA that it has now been found in Europe for the first time, not to mention Norway.
“It is clear we should be concerned. Norway is a country with very good animal health. It is rare for us to in a situation where diseases emerge first here. This is something we have to examine carefully in the future,” stressed Landsverk.
