The risk that  18- and 19-year-olds will die or be seriously injured in traffic has decreased by over 40 percent in four years, the Institute of Transport Economics informs.

The latest figures for traffic risk of the Institute, which focus on the period of 2013/14 in particular, shows that several groups of road users are at significantly less risk of accidents than in 2009/10. The greatest decrease in the level of risk has been with youth and elderly people.

Traditionally, it is precisely those groups that have the highest risk of traffic accidents. Youth are still at the top of the statistics, but a reduction of 40 percent means that their risk level is approaching that of middle-aged people .

The Institute of Transport Economics (TOI) lists several possible explanations for the trend. Norwegian cars are becoming safer, Norwegian youths may have become more law-abiding and “respectable” than previously, while data from the travel survey suggest that 18- and 19-year-olds are driving less frequently than before.
