Prime Minister Erna Solberg asks for closer international cooperation in order to deal with European employment fraud.

“The Norwegian labor market is globalized. We benefit greatly from the migration of skilled workers and the free movement of people in Europe. At the same time, we have seen that labor immigration can put pressure on the labor market, wages and social benefits. We have also seen an increase in work-related crime. We cannot accept this,” says Erna Solberg.

The Prime Minister and Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Anniken Hauglie took part in the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the International Labor Organization (ILO) in Geneva on Monday. The ILO is the UN’s international special organization for work life.

During her speech, the prime minister drew attention, among other things, to equality in work life, education, the fight against slavery – and violence and harassment in the workplace. She also highlighted how crime in the European labor market can lead to increased nationalism and populism.

“If we are to solve the biggest challenges of our time, we need more – not less – international cooperation. We need a strong UN,” says Solberg.

She calls for closer cooperation on the return of nationals who do not qualify for residence, asylum or protection.

“For 100 years, the ILO has been an advocate for active tripartite cooperation, binding international regulations, labor rights, equal competition conditions and social justice,” says Solberg.

“This is the time to defend everything we have built up over the last 100 years. When the ILO enters its second century, we need to ensure a strong, modern and efficient organization.”
