The world has lost a great statesman by Shimon Peres’ demise, says Prime Minister Erna Solberg. The former Israeli president died on Tuesday night, 93 years old.
– It is with great sorrow I have received the message of former President Shimon Peres’ demise.
We have now lost a great statesman and a brave politician who never let go of the vision of peace in the Middle East. Peres kept his commitment and determination to the very last, says Prime Minister Erna Solberg.
Solberg met Peres during his visit to Norway in 2014.
– He was especially keen to engage youth in the struggle for a peaceful future for the Middle East.
Youth who experience hope, recognition and participation in the community is the main key to peace in the region. This was the vision which Shimon Peres devoted his final years to, the Prime Minister says.
While he was Israel’s foreign minister, he received the Nobel Peace Prize along with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and PLO leader Yasser Arafat in 1994, for having negotiated the Oslo Accords.
Solberg emphasizes his efforts in the service of peace.
– My thoughts go today to the Perez family and to Israel who have lost a great leader.
The statesman and Nobel laureate Peres’s efforts for peace should inspire us all, says Solberg.
Shimon Peres was rushed to hospital after he got a severe stroke after a speech on September 13. He died at Sheba Hospital in Ramat Gan, just east of Tel Aviv.
