Prime Minister Erna Solberg said the treatment of the widow of Liu Xiaobo, Liu Xia, is regrettable. She opens the way for Liu to come to Norway.

On Tuesday, it became known that Nobel Prize winner,Liu Xiaobo’s wife, Liu Xia, 57, had left China after eight years of house arrest. The way she has been treated was ‘regrettable’, said Prime Minister Erna Solberg of Høyre (H).
‘’It’s a shame that she has been sitting under house arrest for charges that were aimed at her husband. But the most important thing is that one has actually found a solution,” said Solberg to NTB news.

The artist Liu Xia has been under house arrest for eight years despite being not charged with any crime. Her husband, who received the 2010 Peace Prize for his work for democracy, died of cancer last July. He had been imprisoned since 2009.

On Tuesday, the Nobel Committee were very soon to welcome Liu to Norway to receive the Peace Prize on behalf of her late husband, who never had the pleasure of receiving the prize himself. Solberg said it’s unproblematic that Liu is coming to Norway.

“There is no limit to people’s entry to Norway in order to participate in anything like that. We have no traditions to put restrictions on that. But first and foremost, she
needs medical treatment at the moment because she has been ill for a long time,’’ said the prime minister.
