This Tuesday Prime Minister Erna Solberg visited Sessvollmoen camp at Jessheim, where Norway’s first conscript women are beginning their military service.
This summer the Military admission and selection (FOS) will be organized for the thirteenth time, and Solberg is the first prime minister to visit this, the newspaper VG reports.
– This is a reassuring sight for both the Military and the Norwegian people. It also is like a fashion show to those who claim that Norwegian youth are sitting on their asses all day, for the people here have really worked out and gone through intensive training, she states.
While women accounted for only 17 percent of those who completed the regular military service in 2015, the introduction of universal conscription this year has meant a much larger percentage of women among the recuits . In this year’s summer influx, the bigges influx of the military, women constituted 33 percent of all the conscripts.
– It’s really quite logical, and it emphasizes that the defense is not just about physical challenges and testosterone. Defense is as much about wisdom and finding good solutions, Solberg says .
– If we can get men to begin to give birth now, we are really on to something, she adds jokingly.
