Four years after a boy died following a ritual circumcision at a doctor’s office in Oslo, the parents have been awarded compensation by The Norwegian System of Patient Injury Compensation (NPE).

Last year, the claim was denied by NPE because they believed that the treatment the child received before and during the procedure was in line with good medical practice, writes newspaper Aftenposten.

However, NPE changed their position after the parents protested the decision and they admitted that the diagnosis and treatment could have been provided earlier, if the child had been given better monitoring.

-I think, it shows that those who are survivors of death due to improper treatment, do not have the rule of law hey should have, says the family’s lawyer Humayan Akthar.

He says that it has been very important for the family to get a final confirmation that they had no guilt in the death.

– It was important to have the case reviewed by several medical specialists to be able to make a decision. That was the reason the case took eleven months to process instead of nine, says communications director Øydis Ulrikkeholm Castberg in NPE.
