Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Søreide met her American colleague,Mike Pompeo, in Washington on Tuesday. She will take up the United States’ new steel tariffs.

It is the first official meeting between the two as foreign ministers said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press release. Søreide will also meet other politicians in charge of US foreign and security policy.

“A good dialogue with my colleague Mike Pompeo and other key actors in Washington is important for building on the solid relationship between Norway and the United States. Regular political contact provides insight into American thinking about central regional and global issues, and the opportunity to promote Norwegian views and assessments. For example, it would be natural to raise the issue of introducing a protective duty on imports into the United States of steel and aluminum from Norway,” said Søreide in the press release.

NATO and transatlantic security will also be a topic of the meetings which take place in advance of the NATO Summit in July.

Søreide will also meet representatives in Congress and “leading think tanks”. At one of them, the Atlantic Council, the Norwegian minister will hold talks on transatlantic security.

The visit to Washington lasts from Sunday to Tuesday, following a visit to New York. The Foreign Minister and Crown Prince Haakon will have a seat in the UN Security Council in the period 2021-22.
