Norwegians’ demand for holiday homes abroad has tripled in two years wrote Finansavisen newspaper. Stiff prices in the Norwegian archipelago are given as a cause.

Today, there are around 90,000 Norwegian households who say they own housing abroad according to Prognosesenteret, a company specialising in analysis of the European real estate markets.
Partner, Bjørn-Erik Øye of the Prognosis Center, told Finansavisen that for the first time there is a situation where the interest in purchasing housing abroad has exceeded demand in Norway. The increase in demand began in the spring of 2016, said Øye.

“At that time, 0.9% stated that they had thought of buying something abroad over three years. Now,by spring 2018, it was 3.4%. That is about the same as 80,000 households. There are thus over three times as many planning to buy a holiday home abroad now than two years ago,’’ he told the newspaper.

He is supported by CEO Agnar D. Carlsen of Norsk Megling International, who says the difference from last year is great. Of Carlsen’s customers, approximately 60% of the property is bought in Spain. He believes the real estate market in southern Europe has generally risen again.

‘’Prices are on the rise again after the financial crisis.Especially in Spain, but also in France and Italy,’’ he said.
